the woman behind the work
About Brittney

I'm Brittney S. Austin, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) and the founder and therapist behind Calm & Curly Therapy. This is the practice I wished existed when I was searching for a therapist who actually got me. I've spent 13 years in the field of mental health, much of it alongside folks in the highest need, like people experiencing homelessness, veterans, and survivors of severe hardship.
As a young Black girl who lived through a lot of instability, I learned early to lean on perfectionism and high achievement as a way to outrun my pain. It wasn't until I did my own inner work that I realized my superpower: taking everything I've lived through and helping others separate their sense of identity from what they've been through.
I'm genuinely in love with what I do, and I think the connection I build with people is felt every time. I'm pro Black, pro Brown, pro queer, and pro do whatever the hell you want, as long as it doesn't involve hate, racism, or sexism.
I'm part wise and part hot mess, and honestly, I think that's a feature, not a bug. It's a reminder that you don't have to be perfect in this space. For maybe the first time, you can show up as you, with zero fear of being judged or talked down to.
I'm well versed in theory, but you're just as likely to hear me quote Young Jeezy or Langston Hughes, or depending on the situation, a little Iceberg Slim (if you know, you know). I invite you to come share space with me as Calm & Curly takes shape.
a little about my life
I don't believe in being a blank slate
I'm a born and raised Pomona girl with a CSUN undergrad, a double master's from Pepperdine, and a report card that always said "talks too much." Turns out that was just market research.
When I'm not working, I'm lifting, spinning to the hoochiest playlist I can find, or hosting my people for too much food and too much laughter. My man and I are also full time staff to two spoiled cats named Corey and Topanga. I cry at stray animals, and I'm the only girl of five siblings. Zero out of five stars, do not recommend.

Every part of who you are is celebrated in this space.
Liberation-minded
Rest, joy, and softness are radical acts. We practice them.
